IMPACT OF CHURCH MUSIC ON STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENTS IN MUSIC AMONG SELECTED ANGLICAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ENUGU

ABSTRACT:

The use of music as a pedagogic instrument is not in doubt, its effectiveness in aiding learning even within the music discipline remains a universal and age long practice. However, the pedagogic potential of music-in-church worship is yet to be fully explored because of the emphasis on recorded music. Therefore, the study aims at examining the pedagogic potentials of church music as an instrument for music instructions in Anglican secondary schools in Enugu. Objectives of study include: determining the type of music that can best aid music instructions in secondary schools in Enugu; to evaluate the potentials of church music as a pedagogic instrument and to assess the impact of church music on students’ achievements in learning music. Some selected Anglican secondary schools were used as variables. Mixed method of research was adopted hence, simple random sampling, participation action research, use of questionnaires and simple percentage analysis were combined for data collection and analysis. The study was hinged on the theoretical premise of Piaget cognitive theory on assimilation and accommodation and Ivan Pavlov’s behaviourism and cognitive theories. It was discovered that church music provided enabling environment for students’ high achievement in music. This is because some students belonging to music groups in the church such as choir, gospel band, youth choral wing, children ministry’s choir among others. In conclusion church music offers students advantage to cultivating interest in music for effective music instructions than recorded music. Thus, it is recommended that music instructors should employ church music to improve music instructions in Anglican secondary schools in Enugu.
