ABSTRACT:

Max Weber’s Ethics and Principles of Economic Development: Lessons for Nigeria, 1999-2017 is a study that is aimed at investigating Max Weber’s Ethics and his religious ideals. It also establishes the functional role religion can play in Nigeria economic development. Nigeria is a multi religious country blessed with rich human and natural resources, but the declining economic development shows that Nigeria has little or less to show for such blessings. This study sets out to find how far Nigeria economic progress has deviated from Max Weber’s economic principles. Historical, analytical and descriptive methods were used to analyze data collected through observation, discussions, interview, text books, dictionaries, encyclopedia and internet materials. The following findings were made; there is a co-relational relationship between religious prosperity and economic development in Nigeria; hard work and diligence are not fully rewarded in Nigeria civil service system. This work recommends that political office holders in Nigeria are to create enabling environment for religious harmony and tolerance; religious leaders should not shy away from Nigerian politics, they can also contribute to economic development of Nigeria.
