ABSTRACT:

The study investigated Librarian’s self-efficacy and motivation as correlates of their job performance in University Libraries in South-South Nigeria. The study is necessitated by the under-utilization of the library and constant reduction of the number of library users in the University Libraries as a result of poor job performance. The study adopted correlational research design. In conducting the research, three research questions were developed to guide the study and three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The population of the study comprised all the academic librarians (170) working in federal and state universities in South-South Nigeria. The whole population size of 170 was used for the study because of its relatively manageable size. The instruments used in gathering data for the study were questionnaires tilted “Librarians General Self-efficacy Questionnaire (LSEQ)”, “Librarians Motivation Questionnaire” (LMQ) and “Librarians Job Performance Questionnaire” (LJPQ). The instruments were developed by the researcher and were face validated by three Lecturers from the Department of Library and Information Science, Department of Educational Management and Policy and Measurement and Evaluation Unit of the Department of Educational Foundations respectively in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The reliability of the instruments was established by administering 20 copies of each of the questionnaires to the librarians at Federal University of Technology, Akure. The data generated were analyzed with Cronbach alpha formula. The reliability coefficients of 0.852, 0.892 and 0.923 were obtained respectively for LSEQ, LMQ and LJPQ. The data generated from the instruments administered to the Librarians in University Libraries in South-South, Nigeria were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Pearson Moment Correlation coefficient was used to analyze research questions one and two, while multiple regression analysis was used to analyze research question three. Hypotheses one and two were tested with t-test at 0.05 level of significance, while hypothesis three was tested with multiple regression analysis at 0.05 levels of significance. The findings revealed very high positive relationship between librarian’s self-efficacy and job performance, high positive relationship between librarian’s motivation and job performance, and very high positive relationship between self-efficacy, motivation and job performance of Librarians. The findings also revealed that all relationships proved significant. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made.
