EXTENT OF SCHOOL-RELATED STRESS OCCURRENCE AMONG PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN ANAMBRA STATE

ABSTRACT:

Teachers, especially those teaching at secondary school level of education are constantly under a tremendous stress related to their job or work domains. Though stress is inevitable, too much and prolonged stress can lead to psychological or mental disorder. This study analysed the extent of school related stress occurrence among public secondary school teachers in Anambra State. Sixteen research questions were formulated to guide the study and twelve null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The design for the study was descriptive survey. The study comprised the population of 5,634 secondary school teachers (1,113 males and 4,521 females). A sample of 1,584 teachers was selected through a multi-stage sampling method. A validated instrument titled “School Related Stress Occurrence Inventory for Teachers (SRSOIT)” was used for collection of data. The instrument has reliability coefficient of 0.60, 0.80, 0.74 and 0.73 for the four clusters. The data collected was analysed using percentages, mean, z-test and Analysis of variance (ANOVA). Findings of the study indicated that: most of the secondary school teachers experienced school related stress associated with instructional delivery, social support/climate, and formal and informal job duties to a high extent, some of the secondary school teachers indicated that they experienced those school related stress associated with informal job duties to high extent. Furthermore, findings revealed that both male and female secondary school teachers experienced school related stress associated with instructional delivery, support/climate formal and informal job duties to high extent. Also findings revealed that there was significant difference in the extent of occurrence of school related stress associated with instructional delivery and informal job duties among secondary school teachers based on gender, location and years of teaching experience; while there was no significant difference in the extent of occurrence of school related stress associated with social support/climate and formal job duties among secondary school teachers based on gender, location and years of teaching experience. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others, that teachers should be trained on stress management/coping techniques. This can be done through seminars or workshop. Counselling sessions should be organized for teachers with a high compulsive striving to achieve much in less time and those with a high competitive tendency.
