ABSTRACT:

Anambra state is faced with environmental health challenges. Most of these challenges are caused by the activities of meat vendors. Meat vendors are people who sell meat to the people and they are supposed to maintain proper hygiene while slaughtering, processing and sell of meat. The main purpose of this study was to determine the effects of environmental health education programme on health knowledge and practices of meat vendors in Anambra State. Ten research questions guided the study. Similarly, ten hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The design of the study was quasi-experimental. The population of the study comprised 384 meat vendors in Anambra State. The sample of the study comprised 253 meat vendors selected through simple random sample technique with replacement. Two sets of instrument developed by the researcher were used for data collection. The first instrument was titled: “Environmental Health Knowledge Test” (EHKT) while the second instrument is titled: “Environmental Health Practice Scale” (EHPS). The face and content validity of EHKT and EHPS were established by the researcher through the use of three experts. The reliability of EHKT was established using Kudder Richardson method and Cronbach Alpha was used to establish the inernal consistency of EHPS. The reliability indices were 0.93 for knowledge test (EHKT) and 0.63 for practice scale (EHPS), which were considered high for the study. Data were collected by the researcher with the help of four research assistants. Data for research questions were analyzed using mean while all the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using ANCOVA. Findings of the study indicated that The meat vendors gained 9.78 environmental health knowledge and 10.68 environmental health practice scores after the environmental health education programme. It was among others recommended that there is the need to include environmental health education programme in the mobile schools for meat vendors and market people in Nigeria in order to expose them to adequate environmental health education which will improve their health knowledge and practices.
