ABSTRACT:

This study was to determine the extent motivational strategies attract and retain technical teachers in technical colleges in South-East Nigeria. Five research questions guided the study and five null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted descriptive survey design. The population of the study was 448 (405 males and 43 females) technical teachers. A structured questionnaire tagged strategies for attracting and retaining technical teachers questionnaire (SARTTQ) was developed by the researcher. The questionnaire has two sections, A and B. Section A contained 25 question items to elicit responses on strategies that attract technical teachers in technical colleges while section B elicited responses on strategies to retain technical teachers. The instrument was validated by three experts one from the Department of technology and vocational education, Nnamdi Azikwe University Awka and two from test and measurement from the department of Educational Foundations, Imo state university, Owerri. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha technique. A reliability coefficient of 0.73 was obtained. The questionnaire was administered and collected after a day by the researcher with the assistance of research assistants. Mean was used to analyze data relating to research questions while z-test was used to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed that salary increase, regular payment of salary, staff promotion, sponsorship to workshops, seminars and conferences, payment of workshop/hazard allowance, award of scholarship to teachers for higher degrees, granting of study leave with pay etc, reserving technically related political and managerial positions to technical teacher are among major motivational strategies that attract and retain teachers in the teaching profession. There is no significant difference between the mean ratings of male and female technical teachers on the extent incentive, staff capacity-building, job and correction of public misconceptions about technical education strategies attract and retain technical teachers in technical colleges. Therefore, the researcher recommended that those motivational strategies that attract and retain technical teachers to a high extent be adopted and implemented by federal and state governments. More Universities and Colleges of Education should endeavour to mount technical teacher education programme very urgently in order to produce more technical teachers who will teach technical subjects in schools.
