ABSTRACT:

This study investigated acquisition and application of digitization skills by librarians in public and private university libraries in South-South Nigeria. Eight research questions and four hypotheses were developed for the study. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised 212 librarians working in the public and private university libraries in South-South Nigeria. The entire population was used for the study because of its manageable size. Two instruments were used for data collections: the cognitive test to ascertain the acquisition of digitization skills by the librarians and the questionnaire to determine the librarians’ application of the digitization skills. The two instruments were developed by the researcher and validated by three lecturers, one in the Department of Educational Foundations and two in the Department of Library and Information Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. To establish the reliability coefficient of the Cognitive test and the Questionnaire, Kuder Richardson KR20 and Cronbach Alpha reliability techniques was used to establish the reliability coefficient. Data generated were analyzed using mean and standard deviation and t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. Results show that librarians in both university libraries possessed Internet skills, technology infrastructural skills, and copyright skills but the librarians agreed that they have not possessed metadata skills. Also revealed from the results, is that the librarians do not apply their possessed skills for digitization. In the public university libraries, results showed that the librarians applied copyright skills only for photocopying. Arising from the findings, recommendations were made for regular training and retraining of the librarians.
