ABSTRACT:

The study investigated career maturity and self-efficacy as correlates of job involvement of secondary school teachers in Anambra State. Six research questions and three hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. The study employed a correlational research design. The population of the study comprised 6,056 secondary school teachers in Anambra State. A sample size of 605 teachers were selected from three education zones in Anambra State using multi-stage procedure. The instruments for data collection were Career Maturity Inventory (CMI), Self Efficacy Scale (SES) and Job Involvement Scale (JIS). Six hundred and five copies of the three questionnaires were distributed to the sampled schools but only 591 were correctly filled and returned by the respondents thereby having a motality rate of 14 copies of the questionnaires. Data analysis was done using the returned 591 copies of the questionnaires. Summed scores were used to answer questions 1 – 3. Research questions 4 and 5 were answered using Pearson Product Moment Correlation to determine the relationships between the variables under study while for research question 6, multiple regression analysis was applied to determine the relationship among the three variables of career maturity, self efficacy and job involvement. Hypotheses 1 and 2 were tested using t-test of correlation while hypothesis 3 was also tested using multiple regression analysis. The findings from the results indicated low career maturity among teachers, negligible negative relationships between career maturity and job involvement and low positive relationship between self efficacy and job involvement of the teachers. The findings also showed significant correlation among career maturity, self efficacy and job involvement. Based on the findings of the study, implications of the findings were highlighted. Recommendations were made which include that; there should be regular supervision of teachers to encourage commitment/job involvement by the teachers. Highly committed teachers should be recognized and rewarded while the recalcitrant ones be punished.
