AWARENESS AND ADOPTION OF MODERN TECHNOLOGIES FOR DISASTER MANAGEMENT IN FEDERAL UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES INNORTH- EAST NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:

Libraries are institutions set up to cater for the educational, cultural, research, recreational and informational needs of their users, but nefarious activities of the insurgence are posing a threat to the educational system in general to the extent that the libraries within these institutions are not safe. Based on this, this study is to find out the awareness and adoption of modern technologies for disaster management in Federal university libraries in North East Nigeria. Eight research questions guided the study and sixteen hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The population for the study comprised 227 academic librarians in federal university libraries in North east, Nigeria. The study adopted survey research design, No sampling was adopted for the study.The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire with four point response options, titled: awareness and adoption of modern technologies for disaster management (QAAMTDM QUESTIONNAIR). The instrument were validated by three experts, two from department of library and information science and one from department of educational foundations (Measurement and Evaluation)with an overall Cronbach reliability coefficient of 0.77. Data were collected through the direct delivery approach. A total number of 240 questionnaire were distributed to the respondents, while a total number of 227 were retired. Frequency counts, percentages, mean and standard deviation were used to answer research questions, while chi-square and t-test for independent sample was used to test the hypotheses posed. The findings of this study revealed among others that a substantial percent of the librarians were aware of all the listed modern technologies used in disaster management in libraries in North east Nigeria. The findings further revealed that librarians’ awareness of modern technologies used in disaster management were independent of gender but dependent on years of working experience. There was a significant difference in the mean response of male and female librarians on modern technologies adopted for management of water and windstorm disaster in university libraries, there was also a significant difference in the mean response of librarians on modern technologies adopted for management of water and windstorm disaster in university libraries in North east Nigeria based on years of working experience. The study drew conclusion and recommended among others that more relevant, adequate and up-to-date technological facilities should be made available to the federal and state university libraries at all times to enable them manage possible disasters they face.
